Before booking your wedding photographer, ask them these questions:

The first 11 questions will help you as you meet with different wedding photographers to pick the right one for you. 

Question 1:  Is my wedding date available?

The first question you should ask a wedding photographer is if they are available for your wedding date. Typically, you’ll include your wedding date in your inquiry so that you’ll find out right away if they can make it to document your big day.

Question 2:  What’s included in your packages?

Your next question is probably going to be about packages and pricing. Ask them about their packages and what is included in each option. Do they offer custom packages for your unique needs? As you start to discuss packages, there are a few more questions you should keep in mind, like:

Question 3:  Is coverage all-day or by the hour?

Some photographers include a certain number of hours of coverage in their packages and some charge by the hour. Chat with photographers about the specifics of your wedding day and determine how much coverage you will need. Then see which package or number of hours you will need based on their pricing structure.

Question 4:  Is an engagement session included, or is it extra?

Some photographers include an engagement session with their wedding collections. Or maybe an engagement session is included in the larger packages only. If you plan on having an engagement session, check to see if there will be an additional cost.

Question 5:  Will there be any travel fees?

If the wedding is in a different location than where the photographer is based, will there be any travel fees for gas, food, a hotel, etc.?

Question 6:  Is a second photographer included?

Some photographers also include coverage from a second photographer in some of their packages. Especially during moments like the ceremony, it is wonderful to have two photographers capture different angles simultaneously. Ask whether or not there is an option for a second photographer.

Question 7:  How long have you been photographing weddings?

Asking how long a photographer has been capturing weddings will help you know if they are newer or more seasoned. Even if a photographer has been in the industry for many years, it’s also a good idea to ask for a full wedding gallery to see what all-day coverage looks like. Instagram can show you the highlight reel, but a full gallery will help you to see how the photographer would document your wedding day from start to finish.

Question 8:  How do you shoot in low-light settings?

Taking photos in natural light is very different from working in low-light settings. Many reception venues are pretty dark and pose lighting challenges. And if you’re planning a grand exit, it will likely be in the dark. Ask if they are experienced in using flash and ask for examples of photos they’ve taken in the dark and in low light. 

Question 9:  What ownership and printing rights will I have to my photos?

What rights will you have to your photos when you receive your gallery? For example, will you be able to download them in high resolution? Or will you have to purchase prints through your photographer?

Question 10:  How do you back up your photos?

It’s so important to have your photos backed up. Ask how a photographer keeps your photos safe while shooting and backing them up.

Question 11:  When can I expect sneak peeks and the full gallery to be delivered?

You’ll also want to know the expected turnaround time for your photos. Will the photographer deliver sneak peeks within a few days? And approximately how long will it take for editing?

Question 12:  What should I bring for detail images?

On your wedding day, your photographer will take images of the little details. These images will include things like your invitation suite, wedding rings, shoes, jewelry, cufflinks, perfume bottle, etc. Check with your photographer to see if there are any additional items you can bring for your detail shots to make them more personal.

Question 13:  What local vendors do you recommend?

Finally, ask your wedding photographer for vendor recommendations! Photographers work in the wedding industry every day, and they likely know the best vendors in the area. I provide a list of recommended vendors for my clients that helps them to find the best team for their wedding day easily.
